Can school counselors deliver cognitive-behavioral treatment for social anxiety effectively? A randomized controlled trial
Warner CM, Colognori D, Brice C….Klein G. JCPP, March 2016
This study of 138 adolescents with social anxiety disorder found that those treated with 12 weeks of Skills for Academic and Social Success (SASS) delivered by a) school counsellors (C-SASS) or by psychologists (P-SASS) both showed similar levels of improvement and greater improvement than those treated with a general counselling program called Skills for Life (SFL). This suggests that with appropriate training, school counsellors may be able to offer effective treatment for adolescents with social anxiety themselves without needing to refer people to specialist mental health services.
