This review of ten studies found that the effectiveness of family-based interventions in reducing adolescent self-harm, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts was related to the duration of such interventions. Brief interventions were less effective than those of intermediate duration. Longer interventions such as dialectical behaviour therapy and multi-systemic therapy were revealed as the most effective.
