This systematic review of 25 trials of family therapy (16 adolescent, 8 adult) found low-quality evidence of its short-term effectiveness compared with treatment as usual and no significant differences based on the age of participants. Due to the number and quality of trials, it was not possible to identify whether specific types of family therapy were more effective than others. These results contrast with previous, less scientifically rigorous reviews of family therapy for anorexia.
