Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) has been shown to be an effective therapy for childhood behaviour problems. However, it’s value in treating childhood depression has never previously been evaluated. This randomised controlled trial of 229 parent-child dyads (children were aged 3-7 years) found that PCIT-E (a modified version of PCIT) improved childhood depression, parental depression and parent stress. It also improved childhood emotional functioning. Such as dyadic therapy may address the needs of children who are too young to undertake individual cognitive behaviour therapy.
