This prospective study of over 1400 participants found that by 16 years of age 7% had reported some type of suicidal type behavior (STB) and 3.9% had reported a suicide attempt. As adults, such reports were associated with higher levels of anxiety disorders and adult STB and poorer functioning across financial, health, legal and social domains. Most of these effects were reduced by adjusting for factors that predicted childhood STB. Only adult STB was consistently predicted by childhood STB.
