Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to be associated with later health problems. This study demonstrates that the timing of ACEs can also be significant, with ACEs during preschool years being associated with reductions in the volume of some brain centres associated with emotional processing (the amygdala and hippocampus) and both ACEs and caregiver support influencing the development of the others (the caudate).
