AVATAR therapy for auditory verbal hallucinations in people with psychosis: a single-blind, randomised controlled trial
Craig, Tom KJ et al. The Lancet Psychiatry , Volume 0 , Issue 0 ,
AVATAR therapy is a new therapy, developed by Julian Leff in the UK, during which people listening to a digital representation of their auditory hallucinations (voices) narrated by their therapist. As therapy progresses, the avatar becomes less hostile and concedes power. This randomised controlled trial of this novel approach showed that AVATAR therapy significantly reduced the frequency of auditory hallucinations, compared with supportive therapy (mean difference −3·82 [SE 1·47], 95% CI −6·70 to −0·94; p<0·0093). Although confirmation of these findings is required in different sites, this may be an exciting new therapy for psychosis.
