Comparison of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Writing Therapy, and Wait-List in Pediatric Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Following Single-Incident Trauma: A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial
C de Roos et al. J Child Psychol Psychiatry. 2017 Jun 28.
This randomized controlled trial of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Writing Therapy (CBWT) and waitlist included 103 children with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It found that both EMDR and CBWT were more effective than waitlist at reducing symptoms of PTSD with 92.5% of children who received EMDR and 90.2% of children who received CBWT no longer meeting diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Less therapist time was required for EMDR (140mins, 4.1 sessions) than CBWT (227 mins, 5.4 sessions), suggesting it may be more cost-effective.
