Despite the initial enthusiasm for early intervention services, there has been more recent criticism regarding the value of specialist services for the treatment of first episode psychosis. This systematic review of ten eligible trials demonstrates that early intervention services are associated with greater improvement in positive and negative symptom severity and lower risk of treatment discontinuation and hospitalisation at all time points between six months and two years.
