This review of 53 studies investigated whether specific biomarkers could predict mood states in people with bipolar disorder. Although individual markers were unable to do so, the combination of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), tumour necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and soluble TNF-alpha receptor 1 was able to differentiate specific mood phases. Together, these markers may have future clinical value to guide the type and duration of treatment for people with bipolar disorder.
