Parental use of ‘cry it out’ in infants: no adverse effects on attachment and behavioural development at 18 months.
Bilgin, A. and Wolke, D. (2020), Parental use of ‘cry it out’ in infants: no adverse effects on attachment and behavioural development at 18 months. J Child Psychol Psychiatr. doi:10.1111/jcpp.13223
Adding fuel to the fire of a longstanding battle between behaviourists (who recommend parents shaping their child’s behaviour) and attachment theorists (who recommend parents following their child’s lead as much as possible), this paper from the UK provides evidence that controlled crying during the first few months of life does not adversely impact behavioural development and attachment at 18 months.
