This systematic review of 39 studies involving over 110,000 participants found that the mean prevalence for sending and receiving ‘sexts’ was 14.8% and 27.4% respectively, with the prevalence increasing with age and over time. The prevalence of forwarding and receiving a sext without consent was 12% and 8.4%. These figures demonstrate that sexting is now a ‘normal’ activity among young people and education about this issue is necessary within the sex education curriculum.
