This systematic review of 34 studies involving over 45,000 children found that childhood chronic physical illness was associated with a greater risk of emotional problems, particularly adult depression (OR = 1.31; 95% CI [1.12, 1.54]) and anxiety (OR = 1.47; 95% CI [1.13, 1.92]). Children with cancer appeared to be at particular risk of adult depression, compared with those who have other chronic physical illness (OR = 1.19; 95% CI [1.00, 1.42). These findings add to the burgeoning evidence base regarding the relationship between physical and mental health issues.
