O’Reilly, L. M., Pettersson, E., Donahue, K., Quinn, P. D., Klonsky, E. D., Lundström, S., … & D’Onofrio, B. M. (2020). Sexual orientation and adolescent suicide attempt and self‐harm: a co‐twin control study. Journal of child psychology and psychiatry.
Young people who identity as a sexual minority (gay, lesbian, bisexual or other orientation) are known to be at roughly twice the risk of self-harm and suicide attempts. This Swedish study of twins found that adjusting for all genetic and shared environmental factors, they remained at greater risk for these events (odds ratio 1.55 (1.11-2.16), suggesting that greater monitoring of this group is important.
