Stepped Treatment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Aggressive Behavior: A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Adjunctive Risperidone, Divalproex Sodium, or Placebo After Stimulant Medication Optimization
Blader, Joseph C. et al. Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Published online February 2020
Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are more prone to aggressive behaviour and the this may be treated using behavioural measures or additional medication. This randomised controlled trial demonstrates that optimisation of the child’s stimulant dose should probably be the first step, following which either low-dose antipsychotic medication such as risperidone or a mood stabiliser such as sodium valproate can be tried if necessary. The former adjunctive medication is associated with greater weight gain.
