This study of 35 children and adolescents with chronic pain found that, compared to two groups of age and sex matched controls, they had greater levels of psychological distress, autonomic nervous system activation, lower heart rate variability and upward shift of c-reactive protein (inflammatory marker in the blood) titres. The authors recommend the use of multidisciplinary mind-body approaches that address psychological distress, physical impairment and stress-system dysregulation.
