The Use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication Methods with Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities: A Research Review
Branson, D., & Demchak, M. (2009). The use of augmentative and alternative communication methods with infants and toddlers with disabilities: A research review. Augmentative and alternative communication, 25(4), 274-286.
Although unaided and aided (including computerised) augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) supports speech development in autistic children, this review did not find overall sustained gains. This is somewhat disappointing, considering the significance of early speech development for longer-term functioning in autistic individuals.
