This 20 year study of extremely low birth weight (less thank 1kg) infants born between 1977 and 1982 showed that they were more likely to maintain a long-term tendency to developing internalising problems such as anxiety and depression. This effect was mediated by self-esteem, suggesting that this may be a useful target for preventing such problems.
