Objectively gauging attachment and caregiving is often difficult to achieve due to the cumbersome nature of fine-grained infant mental health assessment procedures. This study describes the development of a new brief screening instrument, the Atypical Maternal Behavior Instrument for Assessment and Classification System – Brief Version (AMBIANCE- Brief). It has been validated against the longer AMBIANCE questionnaire and the strange situation assessment, and may be a useful instrument to apply in community settings following further evaluation.
