Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Training, UK

This event is organised by the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health in the UK.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a trans-diagnostic therapeutic approach, belonging to the broad church of cognitive behavioural therapies (CBTs). With the practice of mindfulness as one of its core processes, the aim of ACT is to enable people to move toward a life with meaning and purpose through values-based action. This workshop is the equivalent of 6 hours CPD.

Learning Outcomes

• Gaining an overview of the ACT model and its broad evidence base
• Developing an understanding of commonly used experiential techniques within ACT
• Understanding how to apply core ACT processes with Children and young people through the lens of a newly developed ACT based model, DNA-V, that takes account of child development matters

About the day

The ACAMH Avon Branch presents this one-day workshop which will provide an introduction to the ACT model and its underlying evidence-base. The workshop covers a range of experiential exercises designed to introduce delegates to the core therapeutic processes outlined within the model. The latter part of the day introduces delegates to just a few of the wide variety of ways in which ACT can be usefully applied in schools and educational settings. This will include an introduction to the DNA-V model: a recent development in the literature, based on ACT, that takes into account child development models in the delivery of wellbeing interventions to children and adolescents.

About the speaker

Dr Duncan Gillard

Duncan Gillard is a HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) registered Senior Educational Psychologist and an experienced ACT practitioner, trainer and author. Duncan is the co-author of the popular self-help book Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Dummies. He provides psychological services to children, young people, families and school-based professionals. Duncan has over 20 years’ experience as a mindfulness practitioner. His work in the ACT field has focused on supporting staff wellbeing, effective and values-consistent parenting practices and working with young people experiencing emotional difficulties. He also applies ACT-based principles to the field of restorative approaches and conflict resolution.
